Reviews

"At first sight, The Kurds of Iraq is, for a Kurd [like me], not special, but above all recognizable. [...] I just went on leafing through the book till I realized that I had in my hands the recent history of the country where I was born. [...] The Dutch-Kurdish journalist Mariwan Kanie was also full of praise for The Kurds of Iraq, and he, too, used the word recognizable. [He said:] "In this book you see the daily life of the people in their own surroundings." Other journalists often focus on the poverty and backward situations, while Hegener also shows progress and what's positive. [...] Every [Kurd] to whom I showed this book during the past half year recognized something that had to do with his childhood or a special event. [...] The Kurds of Iraq is not just a photobook. Hegener writes in a very informative way about themes from daily life, one per chapter, as well as the history of the Kurds. The way the pictures have been arranged provides an overview of a country as it develops."
